Thad Young denies report he asked for trade, says agent has 'talked' with Sixers GM Sam Hinkie

(AP)

Thaddeus Young denied a report that said he has requested a trade.

The 76ers forward disclosed that he, his agent Jim Tanner and Sixers general manager Sam Hinkie have an open line of communication about trade requests coming from other teams, but Young said his camp has not opened the door to such dialogue.

While frustration is building within a team that has lost seven games in a row, and 14 of 16 overall, Young said he has not asked to be moved by the Sixers.

“I just think how it’s all funny that it’s ‘sources’ said I asked to be traded,” Young said Friday morning, after the team’s shootaround session at PCOM. “At the end of the day, I’m here 110-percent every single game to just play, stay focused and try to win basketball games.”

When asked directly about the Thursday evening report, published by LibertyBallers.com, and whether he had requested a trade, Young said without hesitation, “No.”

“My agent has talked to Sam about different situations and options and stuff like that. There’s been talks about me being traded and me having a lot of frustration, but that comes with losing basketball games,” Young said. “People have to realize that when you’re in a losing situation like we are now, people are going to get frustrated, people are going to tense up and that’s what’s been happening.”

There’s justification for Young’s frustration.

The longest-tenured Sixer, who’s been with the team since being taken 12th overall in the 2007 draft, Young has had five coaches in his seven-season tenure in Philly. The 25-year-old is only two years removed from his team making the second round of the playoffs. And this season, he’s overseeing an overhaul with the Sixers, who have nine players with two or fewer seasons of experience.

Upon seeing the report about his supposed trade request, Young said he played with his two young sons to take his mind off of it.

“To tell you the truth, I saw it, I laughed, and I started playing with my kids,” Young said. “I can’t let anything get me upset. I just have to keep playing, keep being focused and keep being the family man I am. I went back to playing with my kids. They were at home, smiling and playing, and that was happy for me.”

But is it possible Young is being shopped? He said yes.

"If there's something put on the table, (Hinkie) is going to listen," Young said.

Young, who’s making $8.6 million this season, potentially has two years left on his deal. He’s set to earn $9.16 million next year and has a player option of $9.72 million for the 2015-16 campaign.

The seventh-year forward is posting 15.8 points, 6.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game. He has thrived as a stretch-four in coach Brett Brown’s offense, being on pace to take more 3-pointers than he had in any previous season. Young is shooting 48.7 percent overall (154-for-316) and 34.9 percent from beyond the arc (15-for-43).

Thaddeus Young's plan amid trade rumors involving Houston's Omer Asik: 'Keep focused'

(Associated Press)

Thaddeus Young said he has not given too much thought to the trade rumors that surfaced over the weekend.

The Sixers were listed as a potential landing spot for Houston forward Omer Asik, an ESPN.com report by Marc Stein said. The Rockets, according to multiple reports, are trying to move Asik by Dec. 19, and Stein’s report said Young would be the return in any deal involving Asik.

“It is what it is. Just taking it day by day,” Young said, after the Sixers’ morning shootaround Monday. “I’m not worried about a trade or anything like that. It’s a business. If it happens, it happens. I just have to live with it, keep moving on it. At the end of the day, I’m here. I’m ready. I’m focused. I’m ready to go out here and think about the game tonight.”

“Not hard to keep focused. It’s basketball. It’s our job. It’s how we make our living. It’s how we make our money. It’s how we feed our families. At the end of the day, it is what it is if it happens. There’s nothing I can do about it. I definitely love Philly and want to continue being here. If they see fit to trade me, hey, my time is up. I have to move on.”

Young is in his seventh season with the Sixers, who drafted him 12th overall in 2007. Averaging 15.8 points and 6.8 rebounds, the 6-8, 230-pound forward is making $8.6 million this season. He’s slotted to earn $9.1 million in 2014-15, with a player option of $9.7 million for the 2015-16 season.

SIXERS SMALL PLAYERS AT DEADLINE

(Associated Press)
True to their word, the Sixers were not big-time players Thursday at the NBA trade deadline.

The club's only activity was trading with Golden State for 6-3 guard Charles Jenkins. In turn, the Sixers sent a second-round draft pick to the Warriors.

Jenkins, who's making $762,000 this season, has an expiring contract, which probably made this move appealing. But it's not as though the Sixers have a lack of wing players. On the flip side, Golden State had to make moves in order to avoid having to pay the NBA's luxury tax.

A Hofstra product, Jenkins appeared in 47 games, averaging 1.7 points in 6.2 minutes per game for the Warriors.

EVAN TURNER ON TRADE RUMOR: "IT'S NOT MY CHOICE TO GET TRADED OR NOT"

(Associated Press)
Evan Turner broached a topic Saturday on which he has no control.

“I'm not a GM,” the Sixers' third-year swingman said, when asked if he had given much thought to an ESPN report saying the Sixers were either shopping Turner or gauging his value on the trade market. “I think it all adds up to what a team needs. That's it. Whatever,” Turner said. “I think the best is yet to come – for me in general, wherever that occurs.”

Circuitously, Sixers general manager Tony DiLeo said he had no comment on the report, from ESPN's Marc Stein.

“I don't comment on any trade rumors,” DiLeo said. “We talk to every team in the league and we'll do something if it improves our team. I have no comment on any trade rumors.”

If the Sixers are hoping to shop Turner before the Feb. 21 trade deadline, his value is falling.
