Michael Carter-Williams makes All-Rookie Team

(AP)
The accolades just keep piling up for Michael Carter-Williams.

Thursday, the 76ers point guard was named to the NBA’s All-Rookie Team. Earlier this month, Carter-Williams was named NBA Rookie of the Year following a successful debut pro campaign, during which he led all first-year players in points, rebounds, assists and steals.

Carter-Williams was a unanimous selection for the All-Rookie Team, receiving 125 first-team votes. Orlando’s Victor Oladipo picked up 124 of 125 first-team votes. Joining them on the First Team were Utah’s Trey Burke, Brooklyn’s Mason Plumlee and New York’s Tim Hardaway.

The Sixers’ Hollis Thompson also received votes, but made neither the First or Second Teams.

Developing Michael Carter-Williams could fall on Tony Wroten, said Brett Brown

(Times staff / ERIC HARTLINE)

Last week, Brett Brown laid out a few objectives for this season, his first as coach of the 76ers. One of them, he echoed, was developing Michael Carter-Williams.

And by the sounds of it, Brown and his staff won’t be the only teachers the rookie point guard will have this season.

Tony Wroten is the best development coach that Michael Carter-Williams will have this year, because Tony Wroten’s energy, pick-up points, physicality make it real,” Brown said recently. “And it develops Michael in relation to the lay of the land of the NBA. It’s a big-boy stage and there’s a physicality Tony can bring to the table, so when we start scrimmaging, and there’s either a casual approach or an aloofness or a cruisy type of style, Tony tightens it up and makes it real – real quick.

“It’s a good thing. Those two will help each other. This is a really healthy thing. We’re going to do our due diligence with all the skill work, but from a reality standpoint on the court, Tony’s got that junkyard dog in him that makes him real.”

Wroten could help the Sixers if he was to land a spot in the starting lineup. He has the energy and the scoring touch to be a productive player for them. But keeping Wroten on the second team, obviously, has value in that it allows the second-year guard to match up with Carter-Williams every day in practice. Defending the rookie at one end and forcing him to play an up-tempo style of defense at the other will have merit for how quickly Carter-Williams can assimilate to the pro game.

Nerlens Noel, Michael Carter-Williams sign rookie deals

Nerlens Noel (NBA.com)
With the opening of training camp penciled in for Saturday, the 76ers contractually locked up two rookies – one of which will be a participant in the preseason proceedings, while the other will be a spectator.

First-round draft picks Nerlens Noel and Michael Carter-Williams came to terms on their rookie contracts with the club, the Sixers announced Tuesday afternoon.

Terms of the deals have not been disclosed, in compliance with team policy. Rookie contracts for first-round draft choices include two-year guarantees with third- and fourth-year team options. And with the NBA’s slotted salary scale for draft picks, Noel figures to make somewhere around $2.5 million this season while Carter-Williams’ pay will hover around $1.8 million.

Noel, the sixth overall pick in the June 27 draft who was acquired from New Orleans in exchange for a package deal that included Jrue Holiday, isn’t slated to participate in training camp while continuing to rehab his surgically repaired left knee. The Sixers will bring along Noel slowly and the 6-11 center’s return to the court shouldn’t be expected any sooner than December, if at all, following an ACL tear in February of his only season at Kentucky.

Carter-Williams, the 11th overall pick by the Sixers, figures to be a starter in the team’s backcourt. The 6-6 point guard out of Syracuse averaged 14 points, seven assists and four rebounds with the Sixers in the Orlando Summer League.

The Sixers will hold media-day proceedings Friday, before opening training camp Saturday at Saint Joseph’s University. Their first preseason game will be Oct. 6 in Bilbao, Spain.
